On Get Rad, for the bass foot on the faster, double-time stuff...do you do a straightforward NoFx sort of beat (1, 2, 3 and, 4): (doo-paa-doo-doo-paa)
or a gallop (1, 2...and 4): (doo-paa-......-doo-paa)
?

eric from nofx uses one foot for the punk beat you're talking about. < i said this about nofx> "Tim uses a double pedal so it comes off pretty similar." < I did not say this!, read below>

It depends on the song, he does the double one on Home and Out of My League, but for all the other fast stuff he does the more separated one. Crank the bass on your stereo and you'll hear it.

Yeah it does depend on the song. Some of them I didn't do the double thing at all, and some of them I kind of mix in when I throw in the doubles (not doing it quite as straight-forward as how Erik from NoFX does). I think we kindof decided that I wouldn't do it on the kindof slower temp fast songs (if that makes any sense). Also, I don't use a double pedal Greatscott. I've pretty much never played on one for more than a couple minutes and I pretty much suck on them haha.

Either I made a mistake in saying that Tim used a double pedal, or a mod edited my post. And my posts have been edited before, so sorry for the mix up Tim... You know what? it had to have been edited, why? Well obviously, Tim's bass drum doesn't sound similar to Eric's. You guys should talk to john or whoever is running the board, it's pretty lame to be censoring and re-editing posts on here.
as far as depending on the songs... the double click on the faster songs on get rad are pretty weak, the 2nd hits are always a bit softer. It sounds as if Tim struggles to play it. I flew out from california to watch the freebird show. Tim didn't double click on the fast songs, i think u can tell in Kara's video too. I'm a huge fan of i12, like i said, 3000 miles for the show, but that doesn't mean i'm not willing to admit Tim can't pulloff the double beat. We've had this discussion on the old board. I think it's about time we concede that although Tim is an amazing drummer, he lacks certain bass drumming skillz. And who cares! right! apparently our boy Scotty used a double pedal, so Tim has him beat.
I've copied this just incase it gets edited again, because we can't say anything negative on here.

oh yeah thats fine to say that about me. I'm not even close to the best at that "double punk" thing in playing drums. It's actually not something I concentrate on or really care to. I feel that theres a lot more important stuff in drums than that and a lot of the music I like to play and listen to doesn't have that. I personally like more solid and in the pocket players than really flashy drummers....guys with a good groove and who play well for the song but thats just my personal choice and everyone likes different things. If you're in a band that does that all the time then thats a good thing to be good at definitely. I guess with I12 and the Softer Side, I could pull it off ok but i see what you mean about both hits not always being as strong and stuff. I'm sure a million guys could kill me at that haha.

I agree with GreatScott, you definitely didn't post that before. If you had, one of us would've definitely pointed out the wrongness of the statement. "Eric uses the double not Tim" something like that, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't your original post. That's really strange.
Anyway, being a drummer, I agree with Tim that there's more to drumming than just that 1-2 punk beat, but after seeing the drummer from Strung Out do the amazing things he does on a single pedal I think bass drumming is an art form all it's own. In my drum lessons in the past 6 months I've already learned four or five different ways to play a bass drum pedal. I think a good drummer should try to learn every aspect of the kit to it's fullest, that way your opportunities for playing will be endless.

GreatScott-I listened to some of the faster songs on Get Rad since you said that (like "Home"), and you're definitely right. To me it sounds like the first hit is weaker a lot. Then I wanted to listen to the newest Softer Side cd we did, and the double kick things on that cd sounded a lot better and more even to me. Maybe it was the pedal I was using on Get Rad, or maybe I just improved on it because Get Rad was recorded a couple years before that Softer Side album. Listen to the song "Let Me In" on our myspace page (its fast). www.myspace.com/thesofterside Glad you brought that up though because you're definitely right about it on Get Rad. Let me know if you agree if you want. Thanks

listening to "let me in" right now yeah, the double click is much more solid, but it's spread out, but that's good, it can get pretty repetitive like nofx. I don't expect a song to have the non stop 1-2 blast beat, but it's always nice to know that the drummer could pull it off if he wants. Larzon, the millencolin drummer used to do that beat but not any longer, but still throws it in now and then. Or take Jord from propagandhi. Have you heard potemkin city limits? brilliant drumming! and not dependent on the 1-2 blast beat.
There are just a few spots on Get Rad where I wished you "threw in" the double click. It's not an issue of tempo, but of an extra hit. I think labels are for cans could've benefited.
Again, Tim, you rock, when I saw you in Cali for the first time with Yellowcard I was so freakin' proud. I knew you were the best replacement for scott. And that's why I find it easy to nick pick over something like the bass drum. So if you decide to throw one in on the new sensei album, I'll marry you. ha, peace out.

haha thanks man...I appreciate the critiques, because its constructive criticism, and you can only benefit from that. I learned from what you said, and now I wish I could have done better on Get Rad, but hey, thats ok its in the past. Ben was right about practicing everything you can in drumming. The best you are at playing everything, and improving independence with both arms and legs, the better player you will be. Even if you don't use it all the time, having the ability can never hurt. Thanks for the compliments on my playing...its pretty much what I love to do the most in life so I take it seriously, and am sure a lot of you guys are the same about your playing.
