I'm going in to work with Paul at Vision Sounds in a few weeks and I was wondering if you had any advice for me in terms of pre-production, recording tips, tuning tips, etc...
Some things I'd really like to know are what snare you used for the recording...I know you borrowed it from Paul...I was just wondering what it was. I really like the fat, solid sound you got from it.
Also, what did you do to your toms to get them to also have that same solid tone...rings? mufflers, etc... Thanks man...hope to hear from you.
P.S. Anyone else on this message board that has any advice I would LOVE to hear it.

Hey Ryan-That rules that you're going in to work with Paul soon. We (softer side) just got done working with him and it was great...he's awesome. I'd say just make sure to tune your drums as well as you can before you go in. If you're not good at tuning, see if you can get someone is to help you. I'd get new heads if yours are fairly old, but I like to let my heads wear in some for them to sound the best, so maybe get the heads a week or 2 in advance and play them for a good amount of time. I used a Pearl Chad Smith snare on Get Rad and it came out well. Paul can sound-replace the snare you use with a number of other snares, so keep that in mind if you don't like the sound you get out of the one you use. I don't use any muffling on my toms, I like to tune them well and let them ring out naturally. If you're getting some weird overtones, I think that a small amount of tape is ok sometimes in the studio. Other than that, practice up and make sure you know what you're gonna play once you get in...and remember that when you record, go for solid-ness and clean playing over whatever is the hardest thing to play. You're goal is to make it sound good, not necessarily play whats the hardest thing always. Cool, well good luck in there man...let us know how it goes. Oh yeah, and what band are you recording with? Just curious...thanks.

The band's name is Commonwealth...and I just joined a little while ago. They've been playing for a couple of years now and have opened for bands like Hey Mike!, Rufio, Over It, and stuff like that. The music they have on purevolume (www.purevolume.com/commonwealthfl) and myspace (www.myspace.com/commonwealth) is good, but we're going for something a little more musical and melodic this time. Not to say that it still won't be punk, but it will definitely be a step in the direction of rock.
Also, thanks a bunch for the advice. I've used rings for some time now, but I think it would be good to just let the toms and snare ring out. And yea, I'm buying new heads in a week or so so that I can break them in for recording next month.
I'm super-stoked about recording with Paul and Daryl. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun and I'll be more than pleased with the end result.
If anyone else on here has any tips or advice for me, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
